Abstract
Culture Shock is a natural reaction experienced by someone when they are uprooted from the
environment and culture they have lived in and placed into a new situation, due to differences in
climate, culture, language, and customs. A person experiencing culture shock may feel confused,
afraid, anxious, uncomfortable, and it can even lead to conflicts with the local people. In the
Japanese Literature Study Program, many students participate in internship programs and
graduates work in Japan. Although the students and graduates of Japanese Literature have studied
the Japanese language and culture, it does not rule out the possibility of experiencing culture shock.
This can be caused by a lack of understanding of cultural differences, limited Japanese language
proficiency and communication skills, and the absence of language and cultural preparation for
internship participants. Considering that internship programs and graduates working in Japan have
been ongoing for quite some time, this issue become es an interesting and urgent subject for
research. Based on this issue, the objective of this study is to identify the culture shock experienced
by the students and graduates and how they overcome it.
Key Words: culture shock; internship; Japan; working
